SYRACUSE — Many Wawasee students will be receiving free school supplies to start the new year next month.

The corporation announced Thursday that students in kindergarten through eighth grade will receive supplies for the upcoming school year, thanks to multiple grants secured by district administrators.

The funding will cover essential school supplies, and families will only need to provide personal items like backpacks, water bottles, and gym shoes for physical education classes.

If any businesses, organizations, or individuals would like to contribute funds to help sponsor personal items or continue for next year, or for more information, contact Emily Worrell, Director of Communications and Marketing.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Shelly Wilfong says “Knowing that every student will walk into school equipped with the tools they need to succeed is incredibly reassuring.”

“We’ve always had this goal of being able to get to a place where we could provide all the school supplies for what the students needed,” Wilfong said.

It took some $45,000 to cover the new cost, but Wilfong said they want to do this regularly.

“We’ve had a tremendous response. I had no idea that so many people would be that excited that we’re doing it,” she said. “We’re already starting to work with the Kosciusko County Community Foundation to create a fund to help us be able to do this year after year,” she said.
