State Police investigate fatal police-involved shooting in Marion

MARION — An investigation is underway in Marion where a man died following a police-involved shooting.

Indiana State Police have been asked by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office to look incident that happened Sunday afternoon.

Police responded to a residence on South Washington Street following a report of an individual armed with a knife who had sustained a self-inflicted injury.

Officers found the man, Derick P. Morgan, 56, of Marion, armed with a knife and bleeding from his neck. The officers issued several commands to Morgan, but he charged toward a Marion Police officer. The deputy then discharged his weapon, striking Morgan at least once.

Despite life-saving efforts, Morgan died from his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.

State Police are leading the investigation with assistance from the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office.

Once an investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
