Powerful house explosion leaves one dead in Portage

PORTAGE — A house explosion in Portage killed one person after severe storms swept through the area early Tuesday afternoon.

People who live in the Portage neighborhood say the explosion was so powerful, it felt like the house lifted off the ground. The blast sent debris flying and damaged nearby homes.

One person who lives nearby says someone from the family was away at the time, possibly preventing an even worse outcome.

Firefighters remained on the scene for much of Tuesday, working to determine what caused the explosion.
