LOWELL — A multi-vehicle crash on I-65 caused a massive mess and a lengthy backup for northbound motorists at the end of a holiday weekend.
The accident happened around 3 p.m. Sunday on I-65 south of the Lowell exit in a construction zone in which the north and southbound lanes are separated by a concrete barrier wall.
A preliminary investigation shows that a JB Hunt semi was traveling north in the right lane when the attached trailer drove off the right side of the roadway and struck the guardrail.
The semi then struck three other vehicles as well as the concrete divider wall before overturning and blocking all lanes of travel northbound and one lane of southbound traffic.
The driver of the semi was transported to a local hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Minor injuries were reported by the other drivers and occupants involved in the crash.
Due to the massive amount of damage to the barrier wall and the extensive crash scene cleanup, all northbound traffic was diverted at S.R. 10 (exit 230) and southbound was restricted to one lane.
As of midnight, northbound traffic remained diverted at S.R.10 and southbound traffic was still restricted to one lane.
Officials said Sunday they hoped to have all traffic lanes reopened Monday morning.
