WARSAW — The City-County Athletic Complex made some major changes and additions in the past year, but none may be bigger than its new assistant executive director, Megan Davis, who also serves as Warsaw High School’s girls’ track coach.
The past year has been a good one, but Executive Director Mike Heagy said he thinks they’re on an upward trajectory and headed in a new direction.
Heagy said he’s pleased to have seen the funding from the county committee that oversees the inkeeper’s tax hike its support for the CCAC from $80,000 per year a few years ago to $200,000 per year beginning in 2026.
The increase is a big step that will allow the CCAC to continue making improvements, and Heagy said it makes sense since the CCAC is one of the biggest generators of revenue for local hotels.
They’ve used money recently from the KCCRVC and K21 Health Foundation to cover the cost of eight new scoreboards, 18 new soccer goals, and some portable pitching mounds.
But other big-ticket items are needed. Those include new lights for baseball and softball fields, an irrigation system for the soccer fields, and a new fence along Old Road 30, which is a key part of advertising.
The CCAC has never undergone a major fundraising effort in its 31 years, but that’s about the change with the addition of Davis.
Heagy is buoyant about what Davis brings to the team.
“She really brings a different skill set that we were lacking for a while,” Heagy said, adding that she’s meticulous about her work, which has “really lassoed us into stepping up our game, our level of involvement,” Heagy said.
Davis took the job in April and said she wants to put more of a community focus on fundraising. Specifically, she wants to invite local orthopedic companies to be more involved.
“That is something we are looking at pursuing to see if maybe some organizations near or far to us might come in and say, ‘Hey, we might be interested in helping you update this portion of your capital project, and in return, maybe you can slap our name on it, and we would say, absolutely. We’re here to listen,’ ” Davis said.
And with two new companies’ makking recent announcements about plans to construct new manufacturing facilities in Warsaw, David said they hope its another opportunity for corporate support.
“We want to create an opportunity where every single part of our community feels like a part of the CCAC,” Davis said.
Heagy said they hope to unveil some funding plans in the coming months.
Davis also happens to be the first woman in a top leadership position at the CCAC, which she considers a point of pride.
Her years as the head coach of girls’ track and field, where she oversees upward of 100 students, has given her confidence in that regard.
She said she’s more than happy to be a role model for girls participating in sports leagues traditionally run by men.
“You can be a strong leader, you can be a mother, you can be all these things that make you uniquely female, but you can do it in a kind of man’s world and you can be successful at it, and I think this is just kind of another opportunity for me to add to that,” Davis said.
She is also working on developing new CCAC programs involving long-distance running and girls’ flag football, a sport that is seeing an increase in interest.
According to a search on Google, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), says the number of girls participating in high school flag football more than doubled between the 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic years, reaching a total of 42,955 participants.
She’s also working to improve social media engagement for the facility.
